Insuring Safety in the Use of Toaster Ovens

Toaster ovens have become a mainstay in every kitchen, and toasted bread has become America’s favorite on every breakfast table. There’s nothing like a finely toasted piece and your favorite drink. Yet a toaster oven, though able to deliver miraculously delicious treats can be a source of burns and other accidents when not used properly.

At home, children have a particular fondness to toasted bread, especially due to the crisp and crunch that a finely toasted slice always delivers. Add to that the excitement of seeing how the bread goes from soft to crispy — it can be a bit fascinating for kids to inquire and see closely how toaster ovens get it done.

Before allowing your children to operate toaster ovens, several questions must be answered. First, is the child prudent enough to understand that all electrical appliances must be handled carefully, with a view to serious accidents that may result if they are handled inaccurately? Second, is the child tall enough to reach the counter top comfortably and without impediment? A child that must step on a stool or a chair just to get his favorite treat must not be allowed to use one, yet. If you want your child to help in preparing breakfast for the family, you may place the toaster oven on a lowered counter that is heat resistant. Thirdly, providing oven mitts, instead of pot holders can be beneficial in preventing accidents. Lastly, children should only be allowed to use toaster ovens when they are under adult supervision.

Adults are not exempted from accidents that are connected with the use of toaster ovens, especially adults with special needs, and seniors. When it comes to the use of appliances, whether by kids or adults, safety is primordial. Many toaster oven manufacturers have carefully crafted their designs in order to suit as many kinds of people with their specific and particular needs and concerns in mind. Seniors and adults with special needs, if they are to work independently in the kitchen, must at least consult a kitchen interior designer to make the work area conducive to the special needs of a senior or one who is physically challenged. Usually, it would be beneficial to have non-slippery kitchen surfaces on which to place electrical appliances such as toasters, microwaves and waffle irons. It would also be helpful to have a heat-resistant counter top and movable fixtures such as wheel carts nearby for convenient mobility. Some experts have recommended using flat wooden sticks to use for pulling in and out pans and trays of your toaster oven to prevent harm. Tongs can also be quite useful for the same purpose, as well as in handling hot, freshly toasted food. Lastly, when trying to look closely at what’s cooking, experts have suggested using mirrors to minimize the need to get too close and thus sustain burns.

Though generally, toaster ovens are safer to use than conventional ovens, it is still important to keep in mind that one can never be too careful when the safety of the family is at stake.
